March 2013

We may roar as a lion as we head into March. We are not looking to be messing around. We want to focus on our goals, attentive to the calls of the inner muse, and to be as constructive and as resourceful as we possibly can. Even though we are still feeling the onslaughts of winter, and sometimes the ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’, we are willing to do what needs to be done to advance our interests no matter the backdrop of the conditions and the circumstances around us.

We have a strong spiritual nature about us as we start this month. Although we might toy with the idea of role play of savior and martyr, thereby distracting us from the truly meaningful now and again, we may more likely feel impelled as though we have a manifest destiny, as though we have some calling and that our life has significant purpose. Even if our attention is diverted to loud and splashy flashes, we can refocus our concentration on those areas that are of the greatest importance to us.

The month begins with us looking inward no matter what our appearance might be to the outward.

March starts with five planets in the Mutable Water Sign of Pisces, Mercury retrograde, a Mutual Reception between Mercury and Jupiter in their Signs of Detriment, and the Pisces planets squaring Jupiter. Fortunately, the Pisces planets also trine Saturn and sextile Pluto.

We may be off chasing after squirrels or any other distraction that grabs our attention, but at the end of the day we are likely to come back to basics, focus on the essential and figure a best practices approach of attending to our necessary responsibilities. Our head may be in the clouds and filled with all sorts of enticing possibilities, but our feet are firmly planted on the ground. If we could only say the same thing about those characters that pass for ‘leaders’ on the world stage.

March is that transitional month between Winter and Spring. And in preparation of the renaissance that Spring offers us, it would be wise for us to use the early part of the month to do a thorough clean up and clear out in order to make room and space for the adventures that Spring promises.

With the early part of March providing the Pisces planets sextiling Pluto and trining Saturn, we can prioritize our activities, tie up loose ends of outstanding matters and get ready for the thrust of energy that the Aries transiting planets will give us. During this early part of the month, we can use laser-like vision and clear-headed thinking to see who and what works for us. We can determine our primary interests and pay scant attention to our secondary interests, and know the difference between the two.

We may want to broaden our reach and widen our involvements, and it would be wise for us to do so by sampling, testing, trying out but without feeling the need for either a long-term commitment or a distraction from our more important interests.

The strong emphasis upon the Pisces energies begins to diminish after the Pisces New Moon on the 11th as Mars exits Pisces to enter its own Sign of Aries. A greater sense of energy, and especially physical energy, may return to us. We may feel less exhausted by life, as though we had gained a transfusion and in deed we have with Mars moving into Aries.

Another major shift occurs when Mercury turns direct on the 17th, St. Patrick’s Day. This Mercury retrograde could have been especially confusing what with the Mutual Reception between Mercury and Jupiter, Mercury being in the Sign co-ruled by Jupiter and Jupiter in the Sign ruled by Mercury and both in Signs of their Detriment where each is not at all comfortable.

One example of the confusion during this Mercury retrograde was certainly the Italian elections, which produced an effect little more than continuing chaos and the return from the proverbial political dead of Silvio Berlusconi and the advent of the political influence of comic turned politician [although world-wide I’m not sure how one can tell the difference], Beppe Grillo.

Spring is sprung on the 20th at the time of the Vernal Equinox as the Sun enters Aries and inaugurates the new astrological year. With the Sun moving into Aries, we now have a Stellium of three or more planets in Aries as the Sun joins Mars and Uranus in the Cardinal Fire Sign. On the 21st-22nd, this Aries Stellium is reinforced by Venus exiting Pisces, ending the Stellium in Pisces, and Venus entering Aries where we now have four planets in the Cardinal Fire Sign.

What a difference between the first half of March and the second half of March. While people may have been overly sensitive, even to the point of moaning and whining and wringing their hands at feeling victimized by all the vicissitudes of life during the first half of March; there is a brand new day dawning as we come into the second half of March. Suddenly, we feel energized, more assertive, even aggressive and willing to take on the world and all its craziness and all the crazies.

While we may have been highly compassionate and considerate of the ills in the world, we’re giving that up for more of a self-assertive and self-focused phase. We may not know exactly where we are going, but we are going and going with passion and determination.

Launch time it is, as we look to put our mark on our activities, initiate projects and move ahead with a greater self-determination and a willingness to do things our way. The desire for investigation and exploration can be strong with this Aries thrust, for the Aries transiting planets will be sextiling Jupiter, conjuncting Uranus and squaring Pluto.

This latter part of March and into April can be an active time with various twists and turns. We may see people rise up against the powers-that-be, in whatever format that might take on. Maybe we just shrug our shoulders and decide that we are not too interested in the power plays perpetrated on the general populace. Perhaps we decide, more now than ever, to march to our own drummer, do our own thing, and embrace our true individuality with little regard for consensus opinion or expectation of conformity. Not only do we want to be free. We are likely to engage greater autonomy. Some may call it narcissism , but in truth each of us is accepting our personal journey with its individual pathways.

We might be calling out the words from an old spiritual spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech: “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.”

Although our emphasis on self-exploration, self-development and individual growth could have us heading off into new directions and new projects, we could also find ourselves banging up against the traditionalists, those people who have bought into the belief that the ‘tried and true’ is the acceptable and correct way to do things, even though those tried ways are no longer true but could instead lead us down a seemingly garden path that only eventually leads into brambles, rabbit holes and dead ends.

The way of the past no longer works. The mindset of the past provides no clues for the future, much less the present. The so-called ‘leaders’ may say they know the way, but their answers are more reminiscent of the saying: ‘meet the new boss, same as the old boss’.

These times demand that we take responsibility for our decisions and our actions and accept accountability of our journey, all the while realizing that things can change in a nanosecond and the truth of the saying that ‘if you want to make god laugh, tell god your plans’.

While me might need to write our plans in pencil with a large eraser, the question of where we are going is not as significant as to how we are getting there. Our trajectory, itinerary, circumstances may all shift and change, but judgment regarding success or failure should be suspended. We are no longer in a world of beginning, middle, end. We have crossed a threshold into a world of process, where things continually and constantly shift and change. In realizing that it is not where we are going but how we are going, the importance in this new paradigm of process with its asequential characteristics is the how of who we are — our integrity, our character, our honesty and our sincerity.

The latter part of March allows us the blank canvass of self-discovery, testing out new facets of who we are, bringing forth a new sense of ourselves through trying out new interests and the resulting growth and development of our being.

Spring is the season of rebirth, renewal, renaissance and no more so than this Spring aided by the strong emphasis of the Aries energy and the push towards shapeshifting, morphing, the transformational phase of metamorphosis — the caterpillar going through the chrysalis to emerge as the butterfly.
