In the early 1980’s Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders had a hit record with Back on the Chain Gang. We could be sharing that sentiment this week.
Some of the lyrics to the aforementioned song go:
“Put us back on the train yeah oh
Back on the chain gang.
The powers that be
That force us to live like we do…”
This week begins with the Virgo New Moon. As though the wind has been knocked out of our sails, we might feel re-engaged with our normal routine. Even if we are back on track with how our lives have been going, we can be looking out at new adventures, new connections, any slight changes that signal the real differences in our lives, whether we have engaged them externally or felt them internally like a volcano percolating below the surface.
We may feel pulled between what we know we need to do to keep things going and a desire to step off the track and embrace the waning moments of summertime. In the US this week leads up to the long Labor Day Holiday weekend, often considered the unofficial end to the summer season.
We may not want our summer to go. We might not want to get back on track, but the inexorable pull to doing what we know we need to get done can be demanding and unforgiving. In a contentious manner, we could engage some fun event blowout[s], and it would be wise for us to monitor and regulate our financial expenditures, since we could easily bet the ranch on good times and personal makeovers in preparation of getting back into our routine.
With the Mars Saturn conjunction exact with the Virgo New Moon, the next two weeks could be one of ‘shake, rattle and roll’. Our semblance of security could seem under major assault, and from many different directions. Various structures can be shaken to their core. We could hear of major corporations having financial problems, some of which may have been the results of creative accounting that start to unravel. Governments may engage some truly bone-headed decisions and movements. Viruses and diseases can continue in the headlines and seem to increase greater liabilities to various populations. Atmospheric storm systems could prove extreme, with intense precipitation and flash floods, all the while that other areas continue to be drought-stricken. Geophysical phenomena can be active as volcanic activity and earthquakes are triggered. This Mars Saturn conjunction at the time of the New Moon can also increase our personal anxiety and a carping attitude of seeing all the ills in the world. We may feel victim to circumstances, all of which seem to be acting out beyond our control.
Relationships this week could prove dicey. Out of our own orneriness and distaste for being forced back into our regular habitual lifestyle, we might play the blame game, choose someone to be our piñata and whack away at our relationship as the cause to the clipping of our wings of self-indulgence and our freedom of movement.
While the long holiday weekend is often the time of a last summer get-away, this weekend we might choose to hang out, hide out and focus on cleaning up and clearing out as we realize that certain projects and activities are just weighing us down.
No matter what our plans and our intentions for the week might be, we could certainly feel this week the overhanging sense of Back on the Chain Gang.
Monday, August 25th – Sisyphus Revisited – Virgo New Moon, Sun, Neptune, Mercury, Mars, Saturn, Venus, Uranus. Monday begins the week with the Virgo New Moon as the Moon conjuncts the Sun and the Moon opposes Neptune. This lunation imprint flavors the next two weeks and indicates our return to our routine everyday lives. This Monday also has Mercury sextile both Mars and Saturn, which conjunct one another today. Venus trines Uranus. This Monday is a highly active day, although our physical energy may not be up to the tasks asked of us. We could be flagging today, feeling the boulder of our responsibilities rolling back on top of us, all the while that we would prefer to be somewhere else and in a time and place of new adventures and fun engagements. The push pull between what we know we have to do and our desire to take off impetuously and enjoy whatever catches our fancy can also be a large part of our fatigue and soulful exhaustion. We may be confused about what we should do first, and we might feel overwhelmed by a long list of tasks beckoning our attention. If we would not fall prey to our emotions or a hypercritical attitude, then we could do what we have to do and still have time to step off the track even for brief, momentary interludes to embrace some wonderful surprises. Let’s avoid the carping and the whining today and instead attend to pressing demands expeditiously in order to have some spare time to take advantage of interesting surprises. We might have boulders to roll up the mountain today, but it would be wiser and easier for us to use winches rather than our brute force.
Tuesday, August 26th – Highly Productive, If We Want To – Pluto, Saturn, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Moon Void-of-Course. Yesterday could have been a tug of war between what we feel we needed to do and what we would prefer to do. If we were strategic about it and didn’t grouse about the dichotomy, we could have done both — taken care of what needed to be done and also had some time to jump off the track and participate in some fun activities. No matter what we did yesterday, today offers us the opportunity to be expeditious and highly effective in getting things done. The Virgo Moon today trines Pluto, the Moon sextiles both Saturn and Mars, and the Moon conjuncts Mercury. The Moon then goes Void-of-Course late in the day, early Wednesday for almost nineteen and a half hours making no further connections to the planets as the Moon finishes its transit of Virgo and before entering Libra later tomorrow. Tuesday also has Venus square Saturn, followed tomorrow by Venus square Mars. We can be highly productive today, virtually to the point of moving mountains. Not only can we focus on attending to the most important matters, we can do so in an expeditious and most resourceful of ways. We just don’t want anyone to get in our way or cause us needless distractions. We can be highly focused and can get more done today than we might even imagine, if we choose to do so. A desire for enjoyment can creep in under the justification that these are the waning days of summer. There will be other times when we can enjoy ourselves, jump off the track and do whatever we please. This Tuesday is best served dealing with our obligations, tasks and our responsibilities.
Wednesday, August 27th – Battle Royale – Moon Void-of-Course, Venus, Mars. Monday and Tuesday might have proven to be high energy, high active days. We could have accomplished a great deal so long as we didn’t resent dealing with our needs and demands placed upon us. Wednesday, the energy dies down. The day begins with the Moon Void-of-Course that started yesterday as the Moon finishes its transit of Virgo with the Moon making no further connections to the planets and before entering Libra later today. We might not have the push to do much at all except possibly straighten, tidy up and engage busy work. Where a problem could arise today is the Venus square Mars. Yesterday, Venus squared Saturn and today Venus squares Mars. Interactions with other people could be a battle of wills and might even flare into a battle royale. Everyone might be looking at upstaging one another, and a nasty tug of war could be engaged. Let’s be sensitive to other people’s feelings today. We might want to emphasize our own personal interests, be a little too grandiose and in the process incite someone to push back against what they consider our arrogance and narcissism. This is a day that calls for respect and appreciation of other people’s positions. Let’s avoid using someone else as our piñata for our own frustrations. Diplomacy is called for today and a willingness on everyone’s part to dismount from their high horse.
Thursday, August 28th – Pleasant Encounters – Jupiter, Pluto. If there were any dust-ups in our encounters with other people over the past few days, Thursday allows us to make amends, smooth over ruffled feathers and make nice with those people we care about. The Moon in Libra today sextiles Jupiter and the Moon squares Pluto. We might be more focused on our interactions than our responsibilities today. In the US we are coming to the long holiday Labor Day weekend, and we are even now more interested in getting together with other people engaging the camaraderie of good friends and enjoying ourselves. We can justify any tune-out to our routine tasks as the prelude to the long weekend, with many people heading off early for the final summer blowout with the upcoming weekend signaling the unofficlal end to summer. While yesterday’s energy might have been eruptive at best, today is far more pleasant with us feeling more upbeat. Let’s see this day as a time when we can recharge, regroup and take a ‘mental health’ day. Even if people are present for their workaday world, they are present in body only, with their minds and spirits elsewhere having a good old time.
Friday, August 29th – Which Way From Here – Uranus, Venus, Moon Void-of-Course, Sun, Neptune. Friday can have us thrown some curveballs that could leave us reeling or, at the least, in a state of confusion. The Libra Moon opposes Uranus and the Moon sextiles Venus. The Moon then goes Void-of-Course for almost seventeen hours making no further connections to the planets as the Moon finishes its transit of Libra and before entering Scorpio tomorrow. The Sun opposes Neptune today. Whether we started our holiday weekend early, this Friday could have us questioning and wondering where we go from here. Our sensitivity can be ratcheted up severalfold especially if we hear about something that doesn’t make sense to us or that triggers anxiety within us. This Friday is a day to draw upon a trusted someone as a sounding board. We might not get what is going on, and we could use another set of eyes and a different perspective in order to better understand what is really going on. We might be impulsive today, but it would be wiser for us not to jump at anything or be impetuous in either our decisions or our actions.
Saturday, August 30th – Lazy Days – Neptune, Sun. Saturday has the Moon moving into Scorpio where today the Moon trines Neptune and the Moon sextiles the Sun. We may be slow starting on this Saturday, more interested in getting a few extra z’s than in jumping into the day. This is a day when we might choose to take things easy, hang out, luxuriate and not feel pressed to do much at all. While some of us might choose to do some clean up projects around the house, putting away some of our summertime toys and preparing for the autumn ahead, many of us might just want to hang out, get together with family and friends for a relaxing day of it. We may choose to be far more minimalist in our involvements today. A beer, glass of wine and idle conversation could be our choice for this Saturday. Even if we feel we are doing nothing today, we might find that the wheels of our mind are turning and giving us thoughts as to where to place our energy and what to focus on in our days ahead.
Sunday, August 31st – Only the Most Significant – Jupiter, Pluto, Saturn, Mars. Sunday does not end the week or the weekend in the US this week, for we have the long holiday Labor Day weekend. Just as the summer days are winding down, so too might we feel as though our energy is also winding down. The week began with the Virgo New Moon and a signature imprint for the following two weeks. The New Moon on Monday had Mars conjunct Saturn. On this Sunday, the transiting Moon squares Jupiter, the Moon sextiles Pluto, and the Moon conjuncts both Saturn and Mars. We could have a sense that the wind has been knocked out of our sails. Our energy might not be the greatest. We might feel as though summer has flown by with us having little to show for it, except possibly added encumbrances to our debt load. On the one hand, today is a day when we want to enjoy ourselves to the max. But our heart and soul might not truly engage the sentiment. On the contrary, this Sunday can be a day when we are giving thought to our expenditures, our expenses and the costs of living as compared to our revenue streams. The latter might seem to have stagnated, while the former might have increased their outflow. This Sunday is a day for us to regroup, recharge and reconsider where we are and where we intend to go. We might determine that we shall focus solely on the most significant factors in our lives, reduce our engagement of distractions and diversions and consider how we can be the most resourceful with what we have. We might feel as though the wind has been knocked out of our sails, but even with a light wind we might consider how we can be the most productive. Now is a time for us to commit, to being more effective with less expenditure of energy, and to working smarter rather than harder.
