February 11th – 17th, 2013

Happy New Year! You may think I’m a little late in wishing you and everyone a Happy New Year, but this past weekend was the Chinese New Year and begins the year of the water snake.

Here is to all the changes, transformations, transitions and slithering about that is likely to go on during this year of the Snake. Just as a snake sheds its skin, this year allows us to shed the old to be born again into the new.

A few years ago, while my wife and I were still living in California and were intending to stay in California, snakes repeatedly came into our lives. After winter, snakes were a natural part of the environment on our ‘ranch’ property in the southern part of Monterey County. We had gopher snakes, and we had rattlesnakes. Three times each summer our dogs would be bitten by a rattlesnake to the point where the veterinarian said our dogs had built up a strong antibody to the rattlesnake bite that such a bite would probably no longer be lethal. My wife and I not so much.

There was one morning when I was about to step out the front door. For some unknown reason, I looked down before stepping out. There was a rattlesnake curled up by the door stoop. I chose to go a different way.

The summer before we moved out of California and in a three-week period, my wife encountered snakes three times. One time was down on the ranch property when she almost stepped on a rattlesnake, a second time was our driving north along the eastern Sierra to get to Mammoth when a snake slithered across the highway, and the third time was in Yosemite when my wife was about to put her feet in the waters of a mountain stream, looked down and saw a snake in the water. We could hardly fathom the transformation that would soon occur in our lives.

My wife received a wonderful job offer in Florida. It was an incredible career opportunity — to develop the educational template of a brand new high school. And it got her out of California, which she had never especially liked and would often suggest that I ‘dragged’ her out to California. The transformation for my wife has been startling, and the signs of the snakes a precursory signal of the dramatic changes to come.

I have written about it before, shall write about it here again.

In Chinese astrology, the year of the Snake speaks to transition and transformation. Just as a snake sheds its skin, the interpretation for this Chinese New Year suggests corrections to some of the excesses that have gone on in years preceding. There may be various shake-ups and unexpected changes.

Some of the historical events that have occurred during the years of the snake have been: 2001 – Terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon; 1989 – Tearing down of the Berlin Wall; 1977 – Restoration to power of Deng Xiaoping in China as the Gang of Four is expelled from the Communist Party; 1965 – US Troop build up in Vietnam; 1953 – Josef Stalin dies, Dwight Eisenhower becomes US President and the Korean War ends; 1941 – Attack on Pearl Harbor and the US entry into World War II; 1929 – Stock Market crash and the Great Depression; 1917 – World War I and the Russian Revolution.
Snake years promise snake-ups and shake-ups and extreme measures.

This week is the first full week of the year of the Snake. This week continues with the volatility in the energies that we should be used to by now. There are times when we have a great deal of energy and push ourselves and others to the limits and beyond. Other times where nothing seems to go according to plan. Delays and blockages seem to slow things down and get in our way.

With the influence of this past weekend’s New Moon we could be looking to launch our boats and initiate new projects this week. We may have done our due diligence, strategized our plans and devised a best practices approach. We can draw upon our intuitive sense, resourcefulness and an ability to cut to the core to be productive and expeditious in all that we do. We could get carried away with ourselves, feeling that we are invincible and using our determination to virtually move mountains. Such persistence and motivation is a grand feeling, but it would be wise for us to continually check and re-evaluate as we proceed forward. Let’s keep in mind that these are times when things can change in a nanosecond, and the conditions and circumstances may shift quickly and unexpectedly.

If we keep our wits about us, this week can be a highly productive week, a time when we can accomplish a great deal. We just need to keep focused, our eye on the ball and look up now and again to see what lies in front of us and what is to our sides, and be willing to shift and change according to changing circumstances and shifting conditions, snake-like.

Monday, February 11th – Running in Place – Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Pluto, Saturn, Moon Void-of-Course, Venus. Monday is the 11th, a master number in numerology indicative of the visionary. And today we could have all sorts of visions, dreams, hopes, wishes, illusions, delusions and other nonmaterial forms crop up in mind. This day has the Pisces Moon conjunct Mars, the Moon conjunct Mercury and the Moon sextile Pluto and the Moon trine Saturn. The Moon then goes Void-of-Course for close to twenty-one hours making no further connections as it finishes its transit of Pisces and before entering Aries late tomorrow, early Wednesday. Venus squares Saturn on this Monday. While our mind could be racing a mile a minute and may consider all sorts of possibilities and thoughts that have no relevance to the matter at hand, our feeling nature and intuitive sense could be highly effective if only we would harness and discipline our mind. Can we say mindfulness? Not mindfull in the sense of having mind full of stuff, but mindful as in attentive and open to the possibilities but always maintaining awareness of the coordinates and the parameters. We could get in quite a snit if we encounter rainmakers, those people who want to rain on our parade, dash our hopes or demand that we be realistic. We can be realistic as long as what our mind conceives our feelings can believe. Let’s take the time to sift through our mind stuff, focus on things that speak deeply to us and then devise the best means to achieve our goals.

Tuesday, February 12th – Plans and Strategies – Moon Void-of-Course, Mercury, Pluto, Saturn. The Moon is Void-of-Course for much of this day, early Wednesday, making no connections to the planets as the Moon finishes its transit of Pisces and before entering Aries. While there is not a great deal of energy today, and we might find ourselves tidying up outstanding matters, we also have a continuation of yesterday’s Moon configuration with Pluto and Saturn. We might have been intrigued as to how to strategize a best practices approach in order to realize our most meaningful projects. We might have given thought as to how we could be both expeditious and resourceful in our ways. Tuesday continues with our intrigue in finding both the core of a situation and the best way to reach that core. Mercury today sextiles Pluto and Mercury trines Saturn. We may be drawing from an intuitive sense or a feeling nature, but our communications and discussions can be very much to the point. We can present our case in an appealing manner that makes perfect sense. Not only can we create quite a story around our interests. We can also convince others that our suggestions are brilliant and spot on. We might find that other people are drawing upon our suggestions and asking for our advice. We may be sensitive to the needs of other people, but we are not falling into maudlin compassion. We are looking for answers. In a most laser-like manner, we can come up with the solutions to various problems and then provide the most effective means to resolve any issues. This is a day for blueprinting our plans, strategizing our methodology, and for sharing our insights with other people.

Wednesday, February 13th – Fast and Furious – Uranus, Jupiter, Pluto. There is no holding us back on this Wednesday. It may be ‘hump’ day as the middle of the workweek is often referred to, but we might feel as though the starting gate has swung open and we’re ready to fly fast out of the gate. Today, the Moon in Aries conjuncts Uranus, the Moon sextiles Jupiter and the Moon squares Pluto. We are looking to put our mark on something, anything, today. Spontaneity and impulsiveness can be our operating format. We can go from one thing to another, trying to engage as much as possible. What we have to be wary of is getting snookered by images and appearances that seem so enticing but could wind up being real head bangers. While a sense of exploration and discovery should be encouraged, we may lack the patience to delve deeply into any one thing. We could find ourselves flitting from one thing to another. Let’s not lose sight of our routine obligations. We may be so interested in the new and exciting that we spend little time on what we need to do. This may be a day for the thrilling and appealing but let’s engage in sampling rather than any intense commitment.

Thursday, February 14th – Lovely Day, Lovely Day – Venus, Sun. Thursday is Valentine’s Day, and this Thursday has the energies that truly match our love and appreciation for those special people in our lives. The Aries Moon today sextiles Venus and the Moon sextiles the Sun. We may awaken with the feeling expressed in the 1977 song sung by Bill Withers and the lyrics:
‘Then I look at you
And the world’s alright with me
Just one look at you
And I know it’s gonna be
A lovely day’

This is a day when we can express, and be shown gratitude, for that special person and persons in our lives. Our lives are made far richer by the beautiful people who add so much to our lives. We are likely to be feeling upbeat today, expansive, exuberant and wanting to shine our light on all those we encounter. We enjoy and celebrate each person’s uniqueness. This is a day when we can see the half glass of water as being half full rather than half empty. We embrace all the gifts and blessings that are in our lives and discount all the difficulties and challeneges we sometimes meet on our journey through this life experience. Let’s celebrate our friends and loved ones. Celebrate our lives and journeys. And celebrate ourselves for being the soul and spirit of light and goodness. Happy Valentine’s Day, loved ones, for we are truly loved and blessed.

Friday, February 15th – Renewed, Revitalized, Re-Engaged – Neptune, Mars, Pluto. No matter what we did yesterday, we may feel refreshed by those random acts of kindness we could have witnessed, those small signs of appreciation we might have experienced. Friday can have us very much focused on doing what needs to be done in order to realize our goals and achieve our intended plans. Today, the Moon moves into Taurus and the Moon sextiles Neptune. Mars sextiles Pluto. We may feel guided, impelled and moved in the right directions. As though divinely inspired, we could virtually move mountains and do so by the most effective means rather than struggling to accomplish our goals. This is a day when we might sense that our efforts are like greased wheels with things developing in an easy manner. We can take things step by step, but we have the passion and determination to accomplish a great deal. This Friday is not a day to be lost on the superfluous and extraneous. If we focus on what we want to accomplish, we can get more done today than on most days. Not only are we feeling good about ourselves, but we might have the sense that we are receiving a little help from our friends, the universal forces.

Saturday, February 16th – Finishing Touches – Pluto, Mars, Mercury, Lunar T-Square, Saturn, Venus. Saturday is one active day. We may be looking at tying up loose ends, taking care of errands and addressing issues that have been long standing that we had put on the back burner. Our sense of accomplishment through drive, persistence and finding the ‘right’ way to get things done can spur us on this Saturday. The Moon continues its transit through Taurus. Today, the Moon trines Pluto, the Moon sextiles Mars, the Moon sextiles Mercury, and the Moon creates a Fixed Sign T-Square with the Moon opposed Saturn and the Moon square Venus. Mars trines Saturn. We can be very adept at dealing with various matters today. We may not be a lot of fun, since we are more focused on what we have to do rather than what other people might want us to do. We also have to careful regarding our finances. With an impulse at clearing the decks and cleaning up our clutter, we could go overboard with buying what we feel we might need to expedite our cleanup and clear out. Let’s maintain resourcefulness and keep a rein on our finances. Someone who wants us to come out and play may chide us for our focus on details and cleanup and might even echo the old childhood poem: ‘Saturdays child works hard for his living’.

Sunday, February 17th – No Win Scenario – Sun, Neptune. Sunday is the last day of the Sun’s transit through Aquarius. Tomorrow, the Sun moves into Pisces, also the day that Saturn turns retrograde. As a final blast across the bow, the Taurus Moon squares the Sun today. The Moon then moves into Gemini where the Moon today squares Neptune. We may be feeling out of sorts today. We might have the sense that many of our well-conceived plans might come to naught. The wind may be knocked out of our sails. But let’s keep in mind that the past three days could have had us operating close to our optimum. This Sunday may be a day for a breather. It would be important for us not to second guess ourselves today and not to judge our efforts or measure what we have accomplished and what we have yet to achieve. Our mind can come up with all sorts of fantasies, reasons and self-admonitions. Why go there? Instead, let’s step off the track, find some uplifting activities to engage and cut ourselves a great deal of slack. This is far better as a rest day than trying to get too much done.
