October 24th – 30th, 2011

The volatility of this week can seem extreme and may have us looking to get out of Dodge over the weekend for some relief from the intensity of it all. The week starts off with quite a buzz. There’s no mistake about why the beginning of the week is often referred to as ‘Manic Monday’, and the start to this week is no exception. Unexpected curveballs and impediments in the way could start the week and all of it orchestrated by the antics of someone else. It would be all right if we could be the conductor of the zaniness, but we might experience ourselves as more the passenger than the engineer of a runaway train.

The placidity of earlier this month [who am I really kidding?] gives way to a ratcheted-up intensity with the Sun having moved into Scorpio this past Sunday, thereby creating a Stellium of three or more planets in the Fixed Water Sign. The Scorpionic influence this week is highlighted thanks to the Scorpio New Moon mid-week and this Lunation casts its impact on the next fortnight, the next two weeks.

The end of the week can be over the top with extremes, whether extreme highs or extreme lows, setting marks for the aberrations during these shape-shifting times. Let’s hold on to our hats, although many of us may take a powder as we come to the weekend, seeking our escape by clearing out of Dodge, getting out of town and seeking sanctuary anywhere other than our home base.

The week can be exhausting but let’s keep in mind that it’s a build up to next Monday’s Halloween. We may be feeling that every day is Halloween with its collage of tricks and treats. As the Chinese proverb that some would call a curse and others would call prophetic states: ‘May you live in interesting times.’

To paraphrase a well-known Bette Davis movie line: Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Monday, October 24th – Another Manic Monday – Lunar T-Square, Uranus, Pluto. Back in the mid-1980’s, the American music group The Bangles had a hit with Manic Monday. Today could be one of those days thanks to the Moon in Libra creating a T-Square with the Moon opposed Uranus and square Pluto. No matter what our plans for this day might be, it would be wise not to carve them in stone but rather write them in pencil with a large eraser. Other people’s issues could get in our way, and we might feel as though we have to slalom between different posts of obligations, impediments and someone else’s concerns. We may have a great deal on our plate today, some of it scheduled, some of it unanticipated. It would be wise for us not to get frustrated or upset by any alterations to our plans. On the contrary, it would be important for us to go with the flow, deal with whatever comes up for us and not get too manic about all that we might believe we have to do. Haste does make waste, so let’s slow it down, deal with things as they come up and look to be as expeditious as possible in resolving matters.

Tuesday, October 25th – Old Friends – Mars, Saturn. Tuesday continues with the Libra Moon, which today sextiles Mars and conjuncts Saturn. This is a day when we might want to reconnect with old friends. We may be able to put our best foot forward, present ourselves in the best light, and be both energetic and helpful regarding someone’s plight. The sense of ‘there but for the grace of god go I’ could be strong for us today. Each of us may know someone who has been going through a difficult time, scraping their knees and unable to clearly see a way out. We could be helpful to someone today, encouraging them and lighting their way. Let’s keep in mind that attitude goes a long way in solving problems — an attitude of confidence, an attitude of humility and an attitude of being open to options and alternatives that we might not always see for ourselves. We could be asked to serve as someone’s life coach today. These times are like a game of leap frog, although nowadays there are times when we need the encouragement and other times when we can offer encouragement. It works both ways, and we could see such a situation today as we touch base with that important person, or persons, in our lives.

Wednesday, October 26th – Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? – Mars, Saturn, Venus, Neptune, Scorpio Lunation, Sun, Pluto, Jupiter. Wednesday could seem action-packed, but possibly only a prelude to Friday. This day has Mars sextile Saturn, Venus square Mars and the Libra Moon trine Neptune. The Moon then moves into Scorpio where it creates a New Moon with its conjunction to the Sun and with the Moon sextile Pluto and opposed Jupiter. ‘Brother can you spare a dime’ was a highly popular song written in 1931 and became virtually the anthem of that depression era of shattered dreams. This day with the Scorpio Lunation also casts its imprint on the fortnight leading up to the Full Moon on November 10th. Financial issues could prove paramount right now. During this time, we might discover whether efforts to bailout Greece can be effective and save the Eurozone or whether austerity measures suggested are just too much for the Greek populace to swallow. Are we in the midst of a domino effect whereby if Greece defaults, who is next? Italy? Portugal? Spain? And while the focus could be on geopolitical worries, each of us might realize that we have to become increasingly resourceful regarding our disposable income under pressure from creeping cost increases. This is a time for us to learn how we can do more with less, how we can get more out of less. Today, and over the next two weeks, it would be wise for us to budget our resources — our time, our finances and our commitments. We may need to pare down but economizing does not necessitate accepting mere survival, for these times ask us not to solely survive but to thrive under a different backdrop of circumstance and conditions.

Thursday, October 27th – Whether We Like it or Not – Mercury, Mars. This Thursday is sandwiched between two quite energetic and intense days. The Scorpio Moon today conjuncts Mercury and squares Mars. We may have to rein in some of our plans and cut back on our swagger. If we do not get carried away with ourselves and avoid being legends in our own minds, we might find that our focus and our concentration is highly astute and able to cut to the core. Our mind is sharp and our perceptions spot on, that is if we don’t get our ego in the way. The less we are in our own way, the more productive this day can be. We can be extremely resourceful, able to see the quickest way to get things done and focused on the most significant without being distracted by the superficial and irrelevant. Where a problem arises is the liability of feeling unappreciated. If we go there, or somebody else goes there, then a cynical attitude could take charge and discussions could then turn into biting commentaries and harsh judgments. This is a day not to feel put upon. If someone tries to get us upset, let’s avoid reacting but take our time and keep in mind that to paraphrase Oscar Wilde ‘for persons with good taste, revenge is a dish best served cold.’

Friday, October 28th – Extremis Maximus – Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Pluto, Sun, Venus, Neptune, Uranus. This Friday seems reminiscent of the refrain from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: ‘…when she was good, she was very, very good, But when she was bad she was horrid’. This day can be incredibly good and / or incredibly bad. Nothing seems done in half measure on this day and the whipsaw between extremes would be enough to give one whiplash. This Friday has Mercury square Mars, Jupiter trine Pluto, the Sun opposed Jupiter and the Sun sextile Pluto. The day begins with the Moon in Scorpio conjunct Venus and square Neptune. The Moon then moves into Sagittarius where it trines Uranus. We may be all over the place today but with the recognition that whether we are up or whether we are down, we are likely to be extreme in every direction. This is a day when we need to be wary of people, or ourselves, becoming too grandiose, embellishing everything and grandstanding with liabilities towards the excessive and indulgent. Today calls for reining in our actions and our passions, for otherwise we could leap ahead in all directions without clear direction or a set itinerary. We may be feeling on top of the world, but our feet might barely touch the ground. We can convince ourselves of virtually anything and give license to our wishes no matter how bizarre they may seem. The desire for expansion, breaking away from our familiar and going for the gold without considering whether it is twenty-four carat or pyrite [fool’s gold] can land us in deep water. Restraints, not bondage, is called for today. But it would also be wise for us not to force issues but rather be open to options and alternatives that could come out of the blue.

Saturday, October 29th – Take Me Away – Saturn. After a likely frenetic few days, especially yesterday and Wednesday, Saturday could provide a happy respite. We are not looking to stay put, however. We want to explore, broaden our reach and enjoy the company of that special person, or people. This day has the Sagittarius Moon sextile Saturn. If we went overboard yesterday, someone today could pull us back in. Other people might prove strong sounding boards and can help us whittle down any commitments or plans made recently in the euphoria of the moment without due diligence. We might want to get out of town today, get into unfamiliar surroundings and look at our plans from a fresh perspective without the familiar either prodding us or forcing us to look in different directions. We may be feeling expansive today but we can structure our plans, determine the right format and strategize a best practices approach. What a difference a day makes! Yesterday could have had us reaching for the gold without considering the means or the intentions of what we were going for. This Saturday allows for a more tempered approach to our ambitions, and we might have someone special to thank for focusing our interests.

Sunday, October 30th – Spirit into Action – Mars, Neptune, Uranus, Jupiter, Pluto. Sunday could have us up and at it. The day begins with the Sagittarius Moon trine Mars and sextile Neptune. We may feel that we have gotten a transfusion of energy. Perhaps we used some of Saturday to recharge our batteries, consider our options and develop a strategic plan. Today we are looking to put our spirit into action. We are interested in our future goals and projects that we could develop to reveal our true creative side. As the day progresses, the Moon exits Sagittarius to enter Capricorn where the Moon today squares Uranus, trines Jupiter and conjuncts Pluto. Although we might feel somewhat impinged upon regarding what we want to do and how we want to do it, if we take a mature stance, we could be highly effective, focusing primarily on the most meaningful and important to ourselves. This is a day when we might have to whittle down some of our plans and projects, but the whittling could also cut away some of the dross and irrelevant that seemed so inviting on first glance but might not have true staying power. This Sunday is a day to engage our passion and our determination to put our imprint on things but to also focus on those things that would prove worthwhile. We may find ourselves gearing up for the week ahead and it would be smart of us to have a game plan set up but all with the appreciation of possible vagaries that would demand our alterations along the way.
